Keep in mind, these are suggested tools to follow along the PDF. If you do not have access to these items, be creative and find small objects that can be placed inside Play-Doh.

Activity Description

Making bugs with Play-Doh and assorted items are a great way for your little ones to explore, create, and develop fine motor skills. You can follow the steps of the build a bug PDF or create your own!

Steps

  • Step 1: Print out build a bug PDF and gather all tools

  • Step 2: Choose a build a bug design and manipulate Play-Doh with hands and fingers to be used as the body of the bug.

  • Step 3: Follow the steps to place objects into the Play-Doh. There is no wrong way to build a bug, be creative!

  • Step 4: Have your child name the bug and describe characteristics of their bug (how many eyes, what color is your bug, etc.)

Goals

Children love to play with Play-Doh! When attempting to manipulate the Play-Doh, children are strengthening their fingers and hand. When picking up small objects, this helps to develop a neat pincer grasp. Manipulating the small objects into the Play-Doh works to improve in-hand.
