Watermelon Counting

Tools

  1. PDF (Download Here)

  2. Play-Doh Scissors (cut out watermelon PDF in advance)

Activity Description

Let's practice counting with watermelons and Play-Doh! Choose a numbered watermelon and add seeds by rolling Play-Doh into small balls. Don't forget to count how many seeds each watermelon needs!

Steps

  • Step 1: Print the PDF and cut out in advance. For older children, have them practice cutting out the watermelon. Step 2: Pinch off a piece of the Play-Doh while using your "crocodile fingers" (thumb and index finger) and use your little fingers to roll the Play-Doh into a small ball.

Step 3: Place the Play-Doh ball onto the watermelon and continue steps 2 and 3 until there is a correct amount of "seeds" on the watermelon.

Goals

Children will practice counting by naming the number on the watermelon and placing the correct amount of "seeds". When pinching the Play-Doh with the "crocodile fingers" (thumb and index finger), children will strengthen their neat pincer grasp. Rolling the Play-Doh between the little fingers improves dexterity.
