Beading a Number Flower

Tools

  1. Beads

  2. PDF Printout (Click Here)

  3. Pipe Cleaner

  4. Scissors (cut out the PDF flowers)

  5. Tape

Activity Description

Children will practice stringing beads and counting skills by building a number flower.

Steps

  • Step 1: Print out the PDF and cut out the number flower cards. Tape a pipe cleaner to the back of the flower card.

  • Step 2: Children will say the number on the flower card. Then, they will string that number of beads on the pipe cleaner (flower stem). Don't forget to use "crocodile fingers" (thumb and index finger) when picking up the bead and holding the pipe cleaner. Be sure to count as you go!

Goals

Stringing beads is a great way to improve fine motor skills, bilateral coordination, eye-hand coordination, and more.

Tips for parents

Parents, when trying to string beads for the first time, using a pipe cleaner (instead of a string) makes it easier for your little one. Keep an eye on the placement of their fingers when stringing. When the helper hand is holding the pipe cleaner far from the hand that is placing the bead onto the pipe cleaner, it can make it very challenging for them. Both hands should be working close together.
