Asteroid Letter Toss

Tools

  1. Foil Sheets

  2. PDF Printout (Click Here)

  3. Scissors (cut out letter cards in advance)

  4. Tape

Activity Description

Create asteroids using foil sheets! Then, toss the asteroids at a letter on the wall to practice letter recognition.

Steps

  • Step 1: Print out the PDF and cut out the letter cards using scissors. Tape the letter cards to the wall at various heights.

  • Step 2: Crumble sheets of foil into a round shape with your hands to create asteroids.

  • Step 3: Hit a letter target and name the letter! As a bonus, name the letter's sound and/or a word that begins with that letter.

Goals

Learning your letters can be fun and engaging! When crumbling the foil into a round shape, children strengthen the muscles of the fingers and hand, improve bilateral coordination, and hand arches. When throwing the asteroid to a specific letter target, children rely on their eye-hand coordination and motor planning skills.

Tips for Parents

Parents, start your child closer to the wall to get some practice and build confidence. Then, gradually step back to meet a "just right" challenge for your child.
